Navarātri Vidhi of Ugrachaṇḍā Kalpa

Ugrachanda

For those initiated into the Mahāvidyā krama, worship of Goddess Durgā during Navarātra is accomplished in three ways.

Uttama Kalpa or the Superior way
In this method, aṣṭādaśabhujī Ugracaṇḍā is invoked within a Triśūla or Karavāla (scimitar) during the noon of āśvina kr̥ṣṇa navamī. Jagadambā is worshiped for sixteen days till āśvina śukla navamī and visarjana is done on daśamī tithi.

Madhyama kalpa or the mediocre way
In this method, ṣōḍaśabhujī Bhadrakālī is invoked within a ghaṭa, yantra or an idol during the morning of āśvina śukla pratipat. And worshiped for nine days. Visarajana is done on daśamī.

Adhama kalpa or the inferior way
In this method, daśabhujī Kātyāyanī is invoked within Bilva-patra during the evening of āśvina śukla ṣaṣṭhī and worshiped for three days. Visarajana is done also on daśamī.

Our lineage prescribes the Ugracaṇḍā kalpa where Bhagavatī is invoked during the noon on āśvina kr̥ṣṇa navamī in a Kaṟavāla and worshiped through āvaraṇapūjā using the thirty-two lettered mantra of Ugrachaṇḍā. In my personal worship, a miniature silver Triśūla is used for the sake of utility. Such worship is continued till amāvāsyā. On pratipat, ghaṭasthāpanā is carried out and the Karavāla is placed on top of the ghaṭa. Each of the next nine days, the Navadurgā-s are worshiped:

1 Rudracaṇḍā
2 Pracaṇḍā
3 Chaṇḍōgrā
4 Chaṇḍanāyikā
5 Chaṇḍā
6 Chaṇḍavatī
7 Chaṇḍarūpā
8 Aticaṇḍikā
9 Ugracaṇḍā

In the case of Bhadrakālī kalpa, the formal worship begins on the day of ghaṭasthāpanā and the following ṇavadurgā-s are worshiped:

1 Shailaputrī
2 Brahmacāriṇī
3 Chandraghaṇṭā
4 Kūṣmāṇḍā
5 Skandamātā
6 Kātyāyanī
7 Kālarātri
8 Mahāgaurī
9 Siddhidātrī

In the case of Kātyāyanī kalpa, though the worship is limited to three days, the ghaṭasthāpanā is done on pratipat. Till the morning of ṣaṣṭhī, worship is carried out using the aṣṭākṣara mantra of Muladurgā. The same evening, Kātyāyanī is invoked in Bilva and Navapatrikā (nine herbs), placed on the ghaṭa and worshiped for the remaining three days.
