Nrsimha Jayanti

anantabAhUdaravaktranetram anekakoTyarkanikAsharUpam |
abhedyamAnandamayam mahesham bhajAmi rudrendravibhum nR^isimham ||

By worshipping the Supreme Lord nR^ihari on the auspicious day of nR^isimha jayanti, one attains peace and wisdom. nR^isimha chaturdashi is the best day to recite the great mantrarAja of Lord sarvapraharaNAyudha, who appeared from a blazing jyotirli~Nga during shanipradoSha, as though to prove his abheda with mahArudra. This is also the day when dashAmsha japa of a~Nga mantras of the Lord is performed:

mUlamantram hayagrIvam rAmam kR^iShNam varAhakam |
sudarshanaprachaNDAstram pakShirAjam japetsadA ||

1. anuShTup
2. hayagrIva
3. rAma tAraka
4. rAjagopAla
5. dharaNI varAha
6. astra sudarshana
7. garuDa

The upA~Nga mantras are:

saudarshanam mantrarAjam shamkhamantram ramAm tathA |
dattAtreyam vainateyam vAsudevam ShaDakSharam ||

The pratya~Nga mantras are:

kartavIryam markaTesham mAyAm lakShmIm sarasvatIm ||

prasannArghya is offered to Lord with the mantra mA nastoke, which is described in the Agamas as referring to vIranR^simha, the form offering abhaya to prahlAda:

R^ishirdhAtAsya mantrasya Chando gAyatramuchyate |
devatA vIranR^ihariH maM bIjam shaktirom tathA ||

Other vaidika mantras that sing the glory of various forms of the Supreme Lord are described by Lord mahAdeva to umA, the dashAmsha japa of which is prescribed:

trINI padA vichakrame: mahA nR^isiMha
jvAlAmAlAkulam bhAti: jvAlA nR^isiMha

tryambakam yajAmahe: amR^ita nR^isiMha
namo brahmaNe namo astvagnaye: vAsudeva nR^isiMha
Ardram jvalati: vahni nR^isiMha
vAyavyaM shwetamAlabheta: vAta nR^iMha

atha kasmaaduchyate nR^isiMhamiti yasmAtsarveShAM bhUtAnAm nA vIryatamaH shreShThatamashcha siMho vIryatamaH shreShThatamashcha |
tasmaannR^isiMha aasItparameshvaro jagaddhitaM vA etadrUpaM yadakSharaM bhavati pratadvishhNustavate vIryaaya mR^igo na bhImaH kucharo giriShThAH |
yasyoruShu triShu vikramaNeShvadhikShiyanti bhuvanAni vishvA tasmAduchyate nR^isiMhamiti ||
