Mantra Vismarana

We continue to receive queries on various topics and try sincerely to answer them to the best of our capability. One of the many reasons we decided to do away with the group subscription format was the incessant flow of non-genuine queries. Some examples: I intend a yAtra to Tamil Nadu. Please tell me which place to visit. I need saundaryalahari and lalita sahasranama stotram, please send it to me. I need a guru to teach me srividya, please give me the address. I am initiated into x mantra, what should I do? Answers to many such queries can be easily found by a little hard work on the part of the questioner. That said, genuine queries are always welcome and we actually appreciate those queries which help us understand the shAstras better. The latest query which caught our eye was related to mantra vismaraNa. baDabAnala tantra deals with this topic, and also with cases where the mantra was forgotten right after the dIkShA, within a month, a year or a few years. For the sake of simplicity, one can refer to the following generic pramANa in tArArNava tantra:

kAlItArAsu vidyAsu yadi syAnmantravibhramaH |
tArApUjAM tataH kR^itvA chaikali~Nge shivAlaye ||
kushAsanasthito shAnto japet padmAvatImanum |
ekAdashasahasrANi tato mantrasmR^itirbhavet ||

The above procedure is also adopted in the case of svanalabdha mantra, which one may later fail to recollect. Based on the experience by an upAsaka of kAmakalA kAlI who we were blessed to interact with, the mantra becomes evident to the upAsaka through a dream, voice in the head or a symbol within twenty-one days. Though this instruction seems specific for tArA mantra, the verse itself states its application even in the case of kAlikA manu. Moreover, the same tantra states:

yatte kAlI parA proktA sA tArA parikIrtitA |
saiva shrIShoDashI devI mahAtripurasundarI ||

Thus, this pramANa need not be unacceptable to shrIvidyA upAsakas. Moreover, shrIvidyA ratnamAlA kalpa describes the use of padmAvatI mantra for sanjIvana of mukhya panchadashI under certain circumstances. Also, in the scheme of ekAdasha pAtra sthApanam, padmAvatI manu along with saubhAgya panchadashI is used for laghu shuddhi.
