rAtri sUkta sings the glory of rAtri devatA. rAtri devatA is described to be of two forms in the scriptures: jIvarAtriH and IshwararAtriH. jIvaratri is the normal night when the laukika vyavahAra for that day ceases or attains laya. Ishvara rAtri refers to the state where during mahApraLaya, Ishvara vyavahAra ceases i.e. the dissolution of the prapancha with its Ishwara into shrIparAshakti occurs. What remains is the chidvastu which is brahma-mAyAtmaka or shabala and is the attribute-less primal cause. The same is described in devIbhAgavata mahApurANa:
brahmamAyAtmikA rAtriH parameshalayAtmikA |
tadadhiShThAtR^idevI tu bhuvaneshI prakIrtitA ||
The Supreme Queen Bhuvaneshwari, in who even the parameshwara attains laya, is the adhiShthAtrI of brahmamAyAtmikA rAtri and the sUkta sings her praises.
