Mahaganapati Mahamantra

The sacred mantra of shrI mahAgaNapati constitutes of twenty-eight letters. As the shAstra says, gaNeshastarpaNa priyaH, one can earn the grace of the Lord speedily by offering chaturAvR^itti tarpaNa. There are eight different schemes of chaturAvR^itti tarpaNa taught in different gANapatya shAstras. As taught in our sampradAya, the mUlamantra of mahAgaNapati is divided into fourteen parts of 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 5, 5, 2, 2, 1, 2, 3 and 2 letters each. Each of these fourteen mantra khaNDas represents a vAchya-vAchaka pair. vAchaka is the shakti and vAchya is chit. Various merits are attained by worshipping these mUrtis.

1. mAyA and brahma: Atmaj~nAna
2. shrI and shrIpati: dharma
3. girijA and girijApati: artha
4. rati and ratipati: kAma
5. mahI and mahIpati: mokSha
6. mahAlakShmIH and mahAgaNapati: sarvakAryasiddhi
7. buddhi and Amoda: bhukti
8. samR^iddhi and pramoda: tR^ipti
9. kAnti and sumukha: santoSha
10. madanAvati and durmukha: santAna
11. madadravA and avighna: vighnanAsha
12. drAviNI and vighnakartA: sarvavashya
13. vasudhArA and shaMkhanidhi: sarvadevAnugraha
14. vasumatI and padmanidhi: aShTasiddhi

Thus, it can be seen that there is no fruit that cannot be attained through the upAsanA of shrI mahAgaNapati. A combination of pashupati, gAyatrI, mahAgaNapati and rolamba mantras forms the abhedya astra named vainAyakAstra which was used by shiva to destroy shankhachUDa. This forms the first of the four vainAyakI kR^ityas.
