Works on Mimamsa

mImAsA, as we generally refer to, indicates pUrva mImAmsA and vedAnta is known as uttara mImAmsA. Sage Jamini authored the mImAmsA sUtras and therein, he refers to great masters of antiquity such as Atreya, bAdari, bAdarAyaNa, aitishAyana, kAmukAyana etc. bodhAyana, upavarSha, bhavadAsa, shabarasvAmin etc. have commented on the mImAmsA sUtras of which the last one seems to be the most popular one, probably because of the availability of a critically edited copy. kumArila bhaTTa commented on shabara bhAShya in three parts, shlokavArtika, tantravArtika and tuptika. These form the central texts of the bhATTa school. prabhAkara wrote two commentaries on shabara bhAshya, bR^ihatI or nibandhana TIkA and laghvI or vivaraNa TIkA. Some are of the opinion that the prAbhAkara school was based on the views of authors such as bhartR^imitra, who wrote a commentary named tattvashuddhi on the shabara bhAShya, which has been severely contested by kumArila. Works from these two mImAmsakas can be called as the central texts of mImAmsA as every author after them, even those who commented independently on the jaimini sUtras, were adherents of one of the two schools. maNDana mishra, umveka/bhavabhUti, vAchaspati mishra [shrI Gaurav Mishra, a member from our group is a direct descendent of shrI vAchaspati mishra], pArthasArathi, khaNDadeva etc. are popular mImAmsakas of the bhATTa school. shAlikanAtha, bhavanAtha, Chandra, nandIshvara, rAmAnujAcharaya etc. are adherents of the prAbhAkara school. A third school, called the mishra mata by the navyas, was propounded by murAri mishra, with texts such as ekadashAdhyAyAdhikaraNa forming the core texts.
